Your lawn is not a golf course

When I was a kid, I used to mow our lawn as short as I could so it was more like a golf course when practicing my golf shots. I run into a lot of people that think their lawns are golf course quality, and I hate to break it to you and them, but your lawn is not a golf course. Achieving golf course standards requires a lot more time and a lot more money. Mowing your grass at around 3 inches is a good baseline. In the spring and fall you can drop the mower for a more clean cut golf course look. During the hotter summer months it's best to mow as high as you can. The longer grass will insulate the soil and allow it to retain more moisture for longer. As an added bonus, it will give you more practice playing out of the rough, which is where most guys play their shots from anyway.
