Just because they're called leaves, doesn't mean you leaves them on the grass all winter. You have to get the leaves off of the grass, or they will smother the grass all winter, and leave dead spots (as shown in the the pictures above). Mulching or chopping them up with your mower is preferable, because it adds those nutrients back into the soil.
