Sprinkler Heads water at different rates when watering lawns

Updated: Feb 12

When watering lawns pop-up heads like these are great because they water their zone the entire run time and are very efficient. They are limited in how far they can spray, though.

Rotor heads like these are great because they can spray long distances, but do not water their entire watering zone for the entire run time. They have to turn from side to side, which requires longer run times in order to put out the same amount of water on their zone as a pop-up head.

Mini rotor heads like these are a combination of the two heads previously mentioned. They can spray farther than the pop-up, but not as efficiently. These don't need to run as long as the rotors to put out the same amount of water, but definitely longer than the pop-ups.

In summary, you need to run all these heads at different intervals when watering lawns, depending on the type of head. If you flip your clock open and set every zone to 20 minutes, and have different heads on each zone, you will not be putting down equal amounts of water to each zone. You have to identify which head is in each zone and water accordingly. For instance, when running pop-ups for 20 minutes, you would have to run the rotors for 40 minutes and the mini rotors for 30 minutes in order to put down a similar amount of water. If you have a zone that has different types of heads, you won't have equal amounts of water going down.
